According to a well-known myth, St. Patrick introduced the Celtic cross as he was converting the pagan Irish people to Christianity. According to some, St. Patrick combined the Christian cross and the pagan sun to convey to his newly converted followers the significance of the cross by associating it with the symbolism of the sun's life-giving abilities. Others contend that the cross's placement atop the circle symbolizes Christ's supremacy over the sun, which the pagans worshiped.
